CARDINAL REPLACEMENT –REDUCTION LEVY – November 2, 2010

Cardinal Schools needs your support to maintain quality educational programs for our young people in preparing them for success in life.

The board has been fiscally responsible reducing its budget by just under $2 million in the last 5 years. Since the failure of the May 4, 2010, levy the board has cut an additional $400,000 from the budget for the 2010-11 school year.

However, added financial requirements such as all-day, every-day kindergarten (House Bill 1) and reduced funds such as the phasing out of the Tangible Personal Property tax (House Bill 66) have placed a significant burden on our schools’ revenues.

In June the Cardinal Board of Education voted to place a 6.2 millage(mill) replacement - reduction operating levy on the ballot November 2, 2010, to avoid a $1.18 million deficit and meet unfunded mandates.  The current 7.5 mills levy was passed in 1981 and is now only collecting 1.82 mills.

If the November levy does not pass, over $600,000 will be cut from the 2011-12 school year, which will drastically affect the educational programs at Cardinal.

Without new money we will have to cut staff, programs/curriculum, and postpone the integration of technology into the classroom, which will decrease the quality of our current programs.  The board realizes that such reductions certainly are not desirable but will need to be made in order to maintain a balanced budget.
